The village of Mensano clings on top of a rocky cliff. The first thing that immediately strikes us of the place is the fantastic panoramic view of the Metal Mountains of the Maremma, that made this village, one of great strategic importance. A feud of the bishop of Volterra, it passed under the domain of the Sienese in 1227, due to the arrival in loco of Sienese families: Malavolti, Saracini, Tolomei, Salimbeni. From the end of the XIV century, the importance of the castle quickly declined . Although the walls had been reinforced, during the war against the Sienese Republic, Mensano fell under the Florentines soon after Casole’s surrender. The inhabited area has a semi cylindrical shape with the main road connecting the religious center to the civil one. As a matter of fact, on one extremity stands the Parish, whereas on the other end stand two stone buildings , dating back to the year 1200. Each building preserves a couple of great portals with horse shoe shaped ogival arches . The most important monument in this area, is without any doubt, the Parish of Saint John the Baptist, very interesting example of a Romanesque parish. Aside the religious functions, the church for the entire XIII century, was also the civil center of community life in Mensano.
